Before you submit your site to the search engines, if you are going to achieve high rankings it's vital that you optimise your site first. The following are the top 5 tips for optimising your site:
#1 Make sure you include your most important keywords in the title of your page. That is the area that appears in the title bar of your browser and in the HTML code between the <TITLE> tags.
#2 Make sure that the keywords you use feature heavily in the content of your page. Try to position them near the top also, as search engines place greater value on keywords nearer the top of the page. This is a balancing act, however. Your primary goal is to create readable and useful content for your customers!
#3 Include meta tags. Meta tags are embedded at the top of a web page and are hidden to normal visitors to your site. Search engines use them, however, to determine how you would like to be listed. Make sure the keywords in your meta tags are supported by the content of your page.
#4 Keep your pages short. Search engines tend to ignore content past the first paragraph or two, so if you must have long pages, make sure your keywords are in the content at the top of your page.
#5 Create "gateway pages". As stated in point 2, it's very difficult to write content that is useful for your customers, but also optimsed for search engines. Therefore, create special access pages optimised for search engine indexing for each product or service. In the description use your keywords frequently and then add a link to the actual page on your site for more information. This will result in the page being indexed highly on the search engines, and when your customers access it, they can click-through to your main page and access your site as normal.
